![]() The Lightway protocol has been subjected to a third-party audit, as we explain below, the results of which were quite positive. This protocol uses the open-source wolfSSL cryptography library, which is smart because trying to build new cryptographic systems isn't a safe bet. WireGuard is the open-source heir apparent to OpenVPN and is well on its way to being an industry standard.ĮxpressVPN does not offer WireGuard and has instead focused on OpenVPN and its own protocol, called Lightway. OpenVPN is our long-standing favorite, as it is open-source and has been picked over for potential vulnerabilities by anyone interested in doing so. VPNs are a mature technology and as such there are many ways to create a VPN connection. ![]() We strong encourage readers to use stand-alone antivirus software, enable multi-factor authentication wherever it is available, and use a password manager to store complex and unique passwords for each site and service they use. Only NordVPN and Proton VPN offer access to Tor, multi-hop connections, and split tunneling.Īlthough a VPN can be useful for improving your online privacy, it's just one tool and cannot protect against every threat. That way, your privacy remains secure even if the second VPN server has been compromised. This routes your traffic through two VPN servers. You also cannot use ExpressVPN to create a multi-hop connection. ![]() ![]() Note that you do not need a VPN to access Tor, it's just very convenient. The service does not provide push-button access to the Tor anonymization network, which bounces your requests through several volunteer intermediaries for even more privacy. Unfortunately, that's the end of ExpressVPN's privacy features. Split tunneling is useful for activities like gaming or streaming media, which require a lot of bandwidth but are comparatively low risk. Some VPN companies, like NordVPN and CyberGhost VPN, have expanded to include other branded products like antivirus and secure online storage.ĮxpressVPN does provide split tunneling, which lets you designate what traffic should travel through the VPN's encrypted connection and what should travel outside it. As such, it doesn't provide ad or malware blocking with its VPN or offer any of the add-ons that you might find with other VPNs, such as dedicated IP addresses. In our conversations with ExpressVPN, the company often came back to the idea that it was focused solely on making the best VPN possible. We haven't evaluated Keys, but have many recommendations when it comes to excellent password managers. In addition to the extra connections, six-month and one-year subscribers with ExpressVPN also get access to the company's password manager Keys. (Note: IPVanish VPN is owned by Ziff Davis, 's parent company.) Atlas VPN, Avira Phantom VPN, IPVanish VPN, Surfshark VPN, and TunnelBear VPN don't even bother to limit the number of simultaneous connections. Instead of slowly upping that cap, many VPNs are moving away from such restrictions entirely. That's good to see but not necessarily in-line with the industry. Subscribers at the six-month and one-year levels can use eight devices simultaneously. That's average among the VPNs we've reviewed. With a monthly plan from ExpressVPN, you can only connect up to five devices simultaneously. What Do You Get for Your Money With ExpressVPN?ĮxpressVPN's pricing changes came with some small adjustments to what its six-month and one-year plans offer. Notably, IVPN and Mullvad accept cash payments for even more anonymity. You can also purchase an ExpressVPN subscription with Bitcoin. The company accepts payment by all major credit cards, PayPal, and other services such as WebMoney. Proton VPN, on the other hand, places no data restrictions on its free subscription. TunnelBear VPN offers a free version and access to its global server network but limits you to 500MB (1.5GB with promotions) of data per month. That's not too surprising, as truly free VPN subscriptions are rare. Instead, use the shortest option-or a free subscription if you can find one-so you can test the VPN with all the sites and services you need.ĮxpressVPN doesn't offer a free VPN subscription tier. Generally, we advise against starting with an annual or long-term VPN subscription. Mullvad VPN asks for just 5 euros per month ($5.43 at the time of writing), making it one of the cheapest VPNs available.ĭespite the pricing changes, you still save money with ExpressVPN's six-month and annual plans, but the $116.95 annual plan is still well above the $67.42 average we've seen across the VPNs we've reviewed. The current average monthly price of the VPN services we've tested is $10.03, which is quite a bit less than ExpressVPN's $12.95 asking price. Best Hosted Endpoint Protection and Security SoftwareĮxpressVPN was already on the high end of pricing, and these increases only cement that fact.
